Percentiles

Example

The number of traffic violations recorded by a police department for a 10-day period is shown. Find the percentile rank of the data value 16.

22 19 25 24 18 15 9 12 16 20

Step1:

Arrange the data from lowest to highest

9 12 15 16 18 19 20 22 24 25

Step 2:

Count how many data entries are less than your data point

There are 3 data points below 16, namely: 9, 12, and 15

Step 3:

Plug into formula

\[\text{Percentile}=\left(\text{number of values below }X\right)\cdot\frac{100}{\text{total number of data points}}\]

\[=3\cdot \frac{100}{10}=30^{\text{th}}\text{ percentile}\]
